Wind blade structural composite repair

This course is developed for anyone from an inspector to atechnician in the field, to learn about the principles of Wind Turbine wind blade repair. Repairs on Wind blades are not a common standard in the industry and every Wind blade manufacturer has his own Structural Repair Manual which has to be followed.

EFC owner Bert Groenewoud and Instructor Robert Otterspoor, have a lot of knowledge and hands-on experience in repair of Wind Turbine Blade such as:

  • NDI
  • Damage assessment
  • report writing
  • repair and
  • post-repair inspection.

All gained during several wind blade repair projects for Vestas in the Philippines. (See EFC’s portfolio).

Advised pre-requisites

No previous experience is required, but the EFC TECH 001, composite course is recommended for basic knowledge, or an equivalent level of experience in composite materials and repair would benefit in this coursePlease contact EFC for more information if needed.



Number of participants

Minimum required 4 and Maximum 16 per course*.

To provide participants with theoretical knowledge and practical Hands-On skills necessary to carry out basic fabrication and repair.

At the end of the course the participants:

  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Must be attentive to details
  • Can work according to Safety regulations and recognize hazardous situations & materials
  • Can work with the OEM manuals for interior parts
  • Knows material properties and is familiar with “Handling & Storage” of frozen materials
  • Knows how work with dry glass fabric and liquid Epoxy resin to impregnate wet in wet (Wet Lay-Up)
  • Can apply damage assessment plan work and work as planned
  • Can find steps of repair to be taken in the Aircraft type related OEM manuals for interior parts
  • Can apply fundamental vacuum bagging, bleeder & breather concepts
  • Can repair  Glass fibre single/double curved panels with Nomex® honeycomb and foam core
  • Performs basic ‘Wet Lay Up’ cosmetic repairs in sanwhich panels  from the inside to outside
  • Can apply Tedlar and wall paper
  • Must be able to understand criteria as written in the SAE- CACRC AIR 4938 and Composite Glossary document.

  • Post repair Inspection

  • Nose Cap repair
  • Gurrit, RENOVO repair system usage
  • Safety

Workshop exercises (Level 1-2)

Participants will be intensively monitored while fabricating reinforced fiber laminates from sandwich parts Glass Fiber prep-preg and dry fiber material using various ply lay-Up directions. Lay-Up of vacuum materials and perform vacuum leak checking and curing.

  • Damage assessment and reporting
  • Determine ply directions in Glass, fiber laminates by sanding.
  • Damage removal, scarf preparation for repair using a Wet Lay-Up and pre-preg repair process.
  • Introduction to oven and Hot Bond repair consoles and their equipment.
  • Performs basic ‘Wet Lay Up’ cosmetic repairs in sanwhich panels  from the inside to outsid
  • Can apply Tedlar and wall paper
  • Can cut carpetting and aply seems on it by sewing
  • Repair Gargonets if applicable
  • Can adjust cabin seat cilindersto the right settings
  • Can bond ABS seat covers by dissolving technique
  • Can Install & remove fasteners like treadhed inserst, bushings
  • Can Install heli-coil threaded inserts


  • Multiple choice questions from each of the teachings Level 2-3

  • The examination will be closed book and  can be conducted by a Part 147 approved Examiner
    on request
  • The practical mark will be the average of all marks gained from the practical exercises
    Assessment activities are built into our courses, to give feedback on the achievement and personal potential and kept record in a personal logbook per student.
  • All grades will be recorded in the participant individual training records and kept on record at EFC for unlimited time (compliant with Reference EASA Commission Regulation (EU) No 1321/2014)
  • A certifcate of accomplishment is handed out to each participant.
